Getting into a welder apprenticeship

Under a hood, running beads, being told they are not good enough, and running them again. The learning curve is physical and it takes hours in the booth.

• 18 or older for most industrial work.
• High-school diploma or GED for formal apprenticeships. Employers hiring welders directly often skip it.
• Good near vision and steady hands. Some employers test this.
• Drug screen and physical.

These are what most programs ask. Every sponsor sets its own, so check the program page before you rely on any of it.

Frequently a practical weld test rather than a written one: you weld a coupon and it gets inspected or bent. This trade is unusual in that demonstrated skill can outweigh credentials.

Employer-driven and closer to continuous than the union building trades. Certifications are the gate, and they are earned rather than waited for.

We do not list application dates, because no registry publishes them and we will not invent one. Calling the training center and asking is the only reliable way, and it takes five minutes.

• Booth time is what makes a welder. A short community-college course buys you supervised hours cheaply.
• Certifications are specific to process and position. Find out what local employers actually hire for before paying for one.
• Be careful here: the same welding certificate can cost several times more at a private school than at a community college. Compare the net price of both before signing anything.

None of this disqualifies you permanently. Most of it is a few months of work.
