Getting into a diesel tech apprenticeship

In a shop assisting on services and repairs, learning systems and diagnostics. Fleet work is steady; dealership and field service pay differently and feel different.

• 18 or older for most employers.
• High-school diploma or GED, generally.
• Basic math and a willingness to learn electronics and diagnostics.
• Driver's license. A CDL is often wanted later, sometimes sooner.
• Drug screen and physical.

These are what most programs ask. Every sponsor sets its own, so check the program page before you rely on any of it.

Usually an interview and a practical assessment rather than a formal aptitude test. Employers hire heavily on attitude and reliability.

Employer-driven and closer to continuous than the building trades. Demand is steady because freight does not stop.

We do not list application dates, because no registry publishes them and we will not invent one. Calling the training center and asking is the only reliable way, and it takes five minutes.

• A community-college diesel program is a well-trodden route, and the schools listed here are real options.
• Ask about tools before you commit. Many shops expect technicians to own a substantial personal tool set, and that bill is real money nobody mentions in a brochure.
• Fleet employers, school districts and municipalities often train from scratch and rarely advertise.

None of this disqualifies you permanently. Most of it is a few months of work.
