Getting into a machinist apprenticeship

Loading parts, deburring and learning to hold a tolerance. Machining rewards patience and punishes carelessness immediately.

• 18 or older.
• High-school diploma or GED.
• Good math, including trigonometry for anything beyond basic work.
• Good near vision and steady attention to detail.
• Drug screen and physical.

These are what most programs ask. Every sponsor sets its own, so check the program page before you rely on any of it.

Often a practical or math assessment. Blueprint reading and measurement are the skills employers actually check.

Employer-driven and near-continuous in manufacturing regions. Apprenticeships exist but are less common than direct hiring into a trainee role.

We do not list application dates, because no registry publishes them and we will not invent one. Calling the training center and asking is the only reliable way, and it takes five minutes.

• Learn blueprint reading and precision measurement. These are the two gates.
• Trigonometry matters more here than in most trades.
• Welding and machining share a college program category, so a school listed under welding may teach machining too. Check the course, not the heading.

None of this disqualifies you permanently. Most of it is a few months of work.
