Getting into an HVAC apprenticeship

Riding with a technician or on an install crew. Service work means diagnosing something broken in someone's home or business, which is as much talking to people as it is turning a wrench.

• 18 or older for most programs.
• High-school diploma or GED.
• Basic math. EPA Section 608 certification is required to handle refrigerants, and you earn it early in training rather than before you apply.
• Driver's license, near-universally, because service work is mobile.
• Drug screen and physical.

These are what most programs ask. Every sponsor sets its own, so check the program page before you rely on any of it.

Often lighter on formal testing than the electrical trades. Many employers hire directly into apprenticeship or helper roles based on an interview and attitude.

More continuous hiring than the union electrical trades, particularly with contractor-sponsored programs. Seasonal peaks mean spring is often a good time to ask.

We do not list application dates, because no registry publishes them and we will not invent one. Calling the training center and asking is the only reliable way, and it takes five minutes.

• Get a driver's license if you do not have one. It is close to a hard requirement.
• A short community-college HVAC course can get you hired as a helper, then sponsored.
• Ask local contractors directly. Many never advertise.

None of this disqualifies you permanently. Most of it is a few months of work.
